Mark's noteFrom the teacher behind Tools for Educators and MES English

Body parts almost always come with a possessive: "your knee," "my arm." It's very rare to hear someone say "Timmy was stung on a knee." So I always introduce the words with "your ___" or "my ___" from the start.

There are lots of games you can play with the small cards, but I usually cover body parts with my Exercise Time game.

Useful phrases for Body Parts

Pair the vocabulary with one sentence pattern at a time. Each level builds on the one before.

Starting out

First lessons, once students know the words
  • Touch your nose. Touch your knees.
  • This is my arm.
  • Where's your elbow? Here it is!

Next step

Building on the basics
  • I hurt my ___.
  • My ___ hurts.
  • I have two hands and ten fingers.

Challenge

For older or more advanced students
  • What's wrong? I have a stomachache.
  • We use our ears to hear and our eyes to see.
  • If you have a headache, you should ___.

Teaching tips for Body Parts

Use "your" and "my"

Teaching "your nose" instead of "a nose" from day one means students learn the words the way they'll actually use them, and saves correcting it later.

Get everyone moving

Body parts are made for action games. "Touch your toes," "Shake your hands," "Clap your hands." Students learn the words and plenty of action verbs at the same time.

Notice plurals

Eyes, ears, hands, feet, teeth. Body parts are a natural place to see regular plurals next to tricky ones like foot and feet or tooth and teeth.

Connect to health

Once students know the words, "My ___ hurts" and "I have a headache" are practical next steps. They're useful at school, at home and at the doctor's.

Body Parts lesson ideas

Teacher says

Play a version of Simon Says: "Teacher says touch your shoulders." Students only move when they hear "Teacher says," so they have to listen carefully.

Draw a monster

Call out instructions: "It has three eyes. It has six legs. It has one big ear." Students draw, then compare their monsters and describe them to a partner.

Body bingo

Play picture bingo, but instead of saying the word, point to your own body part. Students find it on their boards without hearing it.

A body parts week

Flashcards and an action game on day 1, word search on day 2, draw a monster on day 3, then bingo or the board game with "I hurt my..." to finish.
