Mark's noteFrom the teacher behind Tools for Educators and MES English

This set has one trouble word: scissors. Before plurals come up, I don't bother explaining that it's plural, and I don't correct students who say "This is a scissors." How you handle it is up to you.

Later on, I bring classroom items back for borrowing: "Can I borrow your eraser?" A simple game where each player needs certain school supplies and has to ask classmates for them works really well for this.

Useful phrases for Classroom

Pair the vocabulary with one sentence pattern at a time. Each level builds on the one before.

Starting out

First lessons, once students know the words
  • What's this? It's a pencil. / It's an eraser.
  • Do you have a ruler? Yes. / No.
  • Open your book. Close your notebook.

Next step

Building on the basics
  • Can I borrow your ___?
  • Where's my pencil? It's in my bag. / It's under the desk.
  • How many pencils do you have?

Challenge

For older or more advanced students
  • I use scissors to cut paper.
  • I need a ___ to ___.
  • The book that is on the desk is mine.

Teaching tips for Classroom

Use the real thing

Every word in this set is probably within arm's reach. Hold up a real pencil or ruler as you teach it, then let students find and hold up their own.

Notice "a" and "an"

An eraser, a pencil. Classroom objects are a natural, everyday way to practice when we say "an."

Practice polite requests

"Can I borrow your...?" and "Here you are" are some of the most useful phrases students will ever learn, and classroom items make them meaningful every single day.

Add prepositions

Put an eraser in, on or under a desk or a pencil case and ask "Where's the eraser?" Familiar objects make prepositions much easier to learn.

Classroom lesson ideas

What's in my bag?

Hide a few school supplies in a bag. Students ask "Do you have a ruler?" until they've guessed everything inside.

Borrowing game

Give each student a card listing three supplies they need. They walk around asking "Can I borrow your glue?" until they've collected everything.

Kim's game

Put eight classroom objects on a desk, let students look for 30 seconds, then cover them and remove one. "What's missing?"

A back-to-school week

Flashcards with real objects on day 1, word search on day 2, the borrowing game on day 3, then bingo or the board game to finish.
