Mark's noteFrom the teacher behind Tools for Educators and MES English

At my own school's Halloween parties, I use my Bone Collector card deck to play War: the person with the most bones wins. The Bone Collector card can be the strongest card in the deck or a joker.

Another favorite is the Candy Zombie card game. Place the cards face down; players try to find four (or all six) pieces of candy, but if the Candy Zombie comes up, they lose. Both games are free to print on MES English.

Teaching tips for Halloween

Keep it fun, not frightening

Very young children can find Halloween images scary. Cute ghosts and friendly pumpkins keep the mood light, and you can remove any cards that don't suit your group.

Not everyone celebrates

Some families don't celebrate Halloween. Framing it as a lesson about monsters, costumes and autumn keeps everyone included.

Describe the monsters

Monsters are perfect for body parts and adjectives: "It has three eyes and big teeth." It's a fun way to review earlier vocabulary.

Watch the long phrases

Trick or treat, haunted house and jack-o'-lantern are longer answers. For a small word search grid, edit the list down to the shorter words.

Halloween lesson and party ideas

Bone Collector

Print the Bone Collector card deck from MES English and play War, Go Fish or any card game. The player with the most bones wins.

Candy Zombie

Lay the cards face down. Players take turns flipping cards to find the candy, but whoever finds the Candy Zombie is out.

Design a monster

Students draw their own monster and describe it to a partner, who draws it from the description. Compare the two drawings at the end.

A Halloween week

Flashcards and the vocabulary sheet on day 1, word search on day 2, design a monster on day 3, then a Bone Collector or bingo party to finish.
